One thing it’s important to be, is honest with yourself about how you view your relationship with God. The nice thing about this is that you don’t have to consider outside opinions. You don’t have to ask anyone what they think or how they feel because this is about your own perspective. It’s just you and Him.
Before you rate the categories below, I want to be clear about something. This is not to cause shame or induce guilt about where you may be slippin. The purpose of this exercise is to take a step back and think about some basic principles of having a healthy relationship with God. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we see that we start to feel defeated by life and forgotten about. This includes the things that have happened to us or around us. We create the narrative of “surely God doesn’t see me because why would He let this happen” or “why hasn’t He saved me” which causes us to keep our distance from Him. Not to mention, the feeling of guilt or unworthiness. We can begin to feel guilty or shameful when we know we lack in our relationship with God. We become embarrassed and assume God is displeased with us so we avoid Him.
While these are common feelings and thoughts, they create a false narrative about who God is and how He cares for us. I’m going to dive deeper into that in a future post, but for now I encourage you to take the time to complete the brief exercise below. My goal is to simply get you thinking about the categories listed and how you rate yourself. This is for your personal use only, so please do not share your results in the comments. I recommend documenting your results with a date. I will prompt us at random times to complete this with the hope of there being gradual progress as we build.
Rate each item 0-10. 0 being the least, 10 being the most.
Faith in God: consider how much you trust God
Quality time with God: consider how much time you spend soaking in His presence without any wants or needs besides wanting to spend time
Discernment of God speaking to you: consider if you know when God is speaking to you or trying to get your attention
Obedience: consider if you listen when God provides instructions or answers
Worship time: consider how often you praise & worship without expecting anything from God for doing it
Gratitude towards God: consider how often you spend time thanking Him, is it just “thank you” or do you get specific
Reading the Bible: consider how often you read to understand the stories & scriptures
Fasting: consider how many times you fast for spiritual purposes, if at all
Again, please note you do not need to comment your results. This is for you and you only, so be real.
Honorable mention: Dedicating a notebook or digital note source for your spiritual documentation is highly suggested. As much as we try to “keep everything in our head,” it’s just not possible. Trust me, I try all the time 😂
If no one has told you today, Jesus loves you!
Oh honey, this was the one for me! Although I’m getting better, I never really sat down and analyzed these categories. So to sit down and have to rate myself in these areas, was different for me and definitely made me think on another level. It’s crazy because we don’t actually know or understand what we are doing, until someone calls us out on it. So, thank you! I can’t wait to go back later on down the road and rate myself in these areas again. It’s so true that when you know better, you do better. So I’m excited to see what’s to come! 🤗💗
